Learn By Doing
At Waiau Area School we work hard to ensure that learning happens for all students, that learning is accurately measured, that evidence is gathered, and most importantly that students and their parents know where they are going next in their learning. Students relish the chance to experience success. It helps establish a desire to learn and builds important learning skills like persistence.
The staff of Waiau Area School have developed curriculum schemes from Year 1-13 that reflect the diverse needs of our students.
The Latest …
Phones Away for the Day
As you know the ‘Phones Away for the Day’ directive is mandated for all schools for the start of Term 2. WAS is no exception.
This means that no WAS students will be allowed their phones out at school. This could mean your child could bring their phone to school and have them of in their bag. This is at their own risk. We are also looking at having a system where a student can hand their phone ni to Charmaine at the office, it’s safely stored and collected at the end of the day.
To ensure we’re all on the same page, I will be sending out a ‘Phones away for the Day’ School Policy via
email to you all.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions or queries – please email me at principal@was.school.nz or send me a text 022 4759 607.
Furthermore, we will continue seeking student feedback on possible consequences for non-compliance. I’d imagine nothing will change in terms of our usual discipline procedures.
WAS is very fortunate that we have whanau onboard where we’re working together in the best interests of our tamariki and rangatahi. Subsequently, if you believe your child is eligible for consideration to have their cell phone in use (i.e. an exemption for special needs/circumstances/impairments) during the school day, then you’ll need a doctor’s certificate/something in writing to explain why this would be so.
Thanks in advance for your ongoing partnership.

Waiau Area School Staff 2024
Our property upgrades are almost complete. Areas on the radar are: C Block replacement double glazed windows, to build a tennis/netball pavillion/covered area along the main courts and a deck outside the staffroom.
We’re very excited about 2024 (current roll of 147 students) and what WAS is able to offer our students. We are able to provide a wide range of subject choices in the senior school with Net NZ (online teacher) as an additional option. Our small class sizes, teachers knowing their learners and a strong sense of belonging are proving to be an on-going success – our student achievement results continue to be very pleasing. 90% of our NCEA students passed last year.
Strategic Goals: Sustaining partnerships, Mental Health & well-being (Sir John Kirwan’s Mitey) second year programme, Culturally Responsive approaches and continuing on broadening our students horizons through our localised curriculum.
Thank you for your continued support towards WAS – we’re all very proud of your community school.
